The monitoring relay for tap changers, also known as the protection relay for tap changers or oil flow relay responds to excessive oil flow in the direction of the conservator and generates a signal disconnecting the tap changer and the transformer immediately from voltage supply.
In oil type OLTCs during normal operation the gases generated due to switching and transition contacts arcing and collected in the gas dome of the monitoring relay. If the gas volume exceeds the volume of the dome, the gas flows in the direction of the conservator.
In vacuum type OLTCs during normal operation no gases generated because arcing quenched by vacuum interrupter during switching.
Therefore, the monitoring relay for vacuum type tap changers should be sensitive to detect the gas generation also.
It is recommended to use the Buchholz relay type a proper damper setting to further protect the vacuum OLTC when gas produced due to leakage of the vacuum interrupter or improper contacts in the oil compartment.
